Jerry Hicks has passed on.

My heart skipped a beat when I read the little blurb on my computer screen. Jerry Hicks had died? I had to read it twice.

I couldn’t believe it. My first thought was, “Oh no, we have lost a wonderful soul, a great thought leader.”

As one third of Abraham-Hicks, Jerry, along with his wife Esther have spent years traveling the country, spreading their message of hope and inspiration, and sharing with people how the law of attraction can help them get more of what they want in life.

They have touched the lives of millions of people from all over the world.

It turns out that Jerry had been battling cancer, but eventually the disease overtook him and Jerry has now transitioned to the next stage of his journey.

He will be deeply missed!

Esther Hicks posted this message on the Abraham-Hicks blog:

Dear, dear Friends,Our sweet Jerry made his transition into Nonphysical last Friday. How sweet the Vortex is feeling to him today!

Jerry said to me when we came together over 30 years ago that given the difference in our ages that it was likely “that I will cut out on you early,” to which I replied, “I don’t mind.” His joy of life and continual new discovery of purpose kept his life feeling fresh and we shared such joyous eagerness for life.

Over the years, Abraham has consistently insisted that there is no death. Again and again they have reminded us that there is only life and more life and more life. It has taken me some time to understand this, and I honestly must say I have not yet fully come to terms with it, but I do believe that in what we are calling Jerry’s death he is discovering the next logical step of life that Abraham has always been talking about. And at times I am catching a glimpse of the bigness of what Jerry is feeling and while I am still pretty mad at him for not sticking around longer to surprise and delight me in all the ways he has been doing throughout our 30 years together I accept fully that the next logical step of joyous life for Jerry was to be found in his re-emergence into Nonphysical.

Since 1985 it has been Jerry and Esther and Abraham and I believe with everything that I am that that has not changed. I know that Jerry will continue to be the third powerful point of the triad of Energy that makes up the Abraham experience and I am certain that his new vantage point will be, as it has always been, of advantage to us all.

I know for sure that Jerry will help me, in time, release my own personal resistance to physical death, because I will not be able to maintain that resistance and also play easily with him. And my desire to continue not only my Abraham experience but also my Jerry experience I am certain he will be the catalyst to help me do what Abraham has been trying to help us all do all along.

Once again, Jerry is out there leading the way for me. But the difference this time is that I must find the way. I am not there yet, but it is my absolute promise to myself that I will find the way, because it is the most natural thing in the world to do and because Jerry has provided for me the reason to do it.

I am eager about what is ahead and while I cannot begin to explain or even imagine the details of how it is all going to play out, I am certain that it will be fun.

I am such a fortunate girl, to have been able to play with Jerry and Abraham and all of you for so many wonderful years and I am so eager to continue doing more of the same for many more years to come. I feel certain right now that not only has nothing gone wrong, but things are going especially right. It will be different, for sure, but it will also be very, very good.

I’m feeling such love for you all, and for Abraham and most of all for Jerry. And as I have said to him a thousand or more times through the years, “Well isn’t life just a kick in the pants?”

Jerry’s passing touched me, I always admired him. He seemed bright, inquisitive, and articulate, and next to Esther, Jerry Hicks was tops at explaining the principles of the law of attraction.

You know what I remember the most about Jerry? That he always seemed happy. He was always smiling, always radiating the love and pride that he felt about Esther. It was a beautiful thing.

I will miss Jerry. Losing him is almost like losing a dear friend. Donna and I have been reading and listening to Abraham-Hicks stuff for quite a few years now. We were even fortunate enough to see them live on one of their stops in our state.

I think the reason I connect with Jerry so much is that, like myself, he was a seeker. I hope that on this next stage of his journey he finds some of the answers he has been looking for.

Although, I suspect that whatever awaits us after our time here is finished, will only lead us deeper and deeper into the mystery of life.

Farewell Jerry!

Personal Development Author Steve Pavlina announces he is leaving Facebook.

Why would a popular personal development blogger and author suddenly up and leave the biggest social site on the planet? I was more than a little surprised when I read that Steve Pavlina was quitting Facebook. At a time when people and businesses are flocking to the social media giant in record numbers, why would Steve walk away?

At first I thought it had to be some sort of publicity stunt, but as I read his post I began to relate to many of the issues he brings up because I know first hand how frustrating Facebook can be.

That wasn’t what surprised me about Steve’s post. Facebook is filled with spammers and hackers, and as you become bigger on the site, you attract more and more of those types of problems.

What surprised me was the tone of his writing.  I expected a quick, ‘it’s not working for me, but hey, this is what I’m doing now…’ sort of post. What I found was much different, much darker than the usual Steve Pavlina post.

According to Steve’s blog post about leaving Facebook, he just got tired of the hassles involved in maintaining a presence on the site. For him, the problems and annoyances of using the site began outweighing the benefits.

Steve writes:

“I dislike the way certain features on Facebook are designed and implemented. They may work okay for most users, but they aren’t a good match for someone in my shoes. Over time I felt like the system was becoming increasingly abusive in the way it treats me as a user, largely due to what I consider to be serious design flaws.”

He goes on to describe some of the headaches involved with Facebook once your number of friends and fans begins to climb. Spam messages, spam posts on your wall, limited control, and unresponsiveness on the part of Facebook’s admin are just some of the problems that finally drove him off of the site.

As I said, I can relate to much of what Pavlina wrote about. My numbers are very similar to his and I’ve experienced many of the same headaches. I’m sure that thousands of people using the site do too.

And I was just about to go on a rant, telling you all about the problems that I experience on Facebook, how unfair some of the things that they do are, and hoping to suck you into the drama with me…

But then, as they always do, a better thought came to me.

I asked myself, is going on and on about this going to help ME in any way?

Is it going to help YOU in any way?

And the answer of course is no.

The truth is that using a site like Facebook is a decision that each of us makes, based upon what we get out of it. I respect Steve for his decision. For me, Facebook is an opportunity to connect with like minded people from all around the world, and I’m willing to put up with some annoyances… simply because the benefits are so enormous.

You see I understand that it is their house, their playground. If you don’t like the rules, you don’t have to play there. That’s fine. We all make decisions like that in every area of our lives, all the time.

That’s a good thing. It is empowering to assert yourself and not settle for things that you don’t want.

What is not empowering though, is getting sucked into the blame game. A little later in his post, Steve continues his tirade,

“As a programmer myself, I can’t fathom that it would take much technical and design effort to address these issues, and Facebook is flooded with complaints from users begging them to fix these headaches. From my perspective as a Facebook user with a very active personal page and fan page, I can’t help but get the impression that Facebook deliberately wants to make some basic admin tasks (like blocking spammers) difficult or impossible in order to compel you to spend more time on the site. There doesn’t seem to be any other logical reason for these glaring design flaws that I can comprehend, other than pure incompetence, and based on their success in other areas, it seems more likely that these choices are deliberate.”

Whew! The words, ‘bitter breakup’ come to mind!

Life will give you many opportunities to move along your chosen path, and many times you have to choose between the low road and the high road. Both roads eventually lead you to your ultimate destination, but one brings inner peace and happiness with it, the other… doesn’t!

James Arthur Ray arrested, charged with manslaughter.

James Arthur Ray was arrested yesterday and charged with 3 counts of manslaughter in connection with the sweat lodge deaths that occurred at a spiritual retreat back in October. Three people died and many others suffered various degrees of distress during a sweat lodge ceremony that took place near the end of a James Ray event in Sedona, AZ.

I’ve shared several postings about this story as important developments took place and watched as this bizarre tragedy unfolded. But I found myself having mixed reactions to the news of James Ray’s arrest.

Much like some readers, I am happy that the legal system is moving forward, taking action, and trying to solve this difficult situation. The victims and their families deserve nothing less.

But at the same time I can’t help but to feel sorry for James Ray. I’ve never attended a James Ray workshop or event, but I have developed a respect for the man and his teachings. What he espouses is very much in line with my own work – which makes it difficult to understand how he ended up in this situation.

My biggest question, and one that many others share, is this: Did James live and act in harmony with what he teaches? In other words, he’s been talking the talk, but did he walk the walk? It’s one thing to talk and teach about personal power and responsibility and another to actually live that way.

I don’t want to get caught up in the legal issues of the case, there will be enough of that all over the web and other media, but I do think that it is important for each of us to pay attention to this tragedy because there is a lesson in here that can help us avoid similar situations in our own lives.

Taken by itself the incident seems to be a case of misplaced personal responsibility, of not knowing your own limits and not knowing when to get out. People make mistakes in judgment every day, and sometimes it costs them dearly.

But is that the case here? There are too many unanswered questions, too many discrepancies between accounts from survivors and from James Ray. Too many past incidents.

James Arthur Ray interview out about sweat lodge deaths

James Arthur Ray, the leader of the retreat that ended in the tragic sweat lodge deaths of three people last October, has finally broken his silence about what happened.

This is the first time James has spoken publicly about the tragedy.

In an exclusive interview that appears on New York magazine’s website, James Ray is questioned about his actions that night and his response to the events of that evening.

The interview was done over the phone, and James Ray was assisted by his lawyers during the call. James was willing to answer most of the interviewer’s questions, but his lawyers didn’t let Mr. Ray answer a couple of questions and instead referred people to the two white papers that James Ray’s company, JRI, (James Ray International), released detailing the results of their own investigation into the sweat lodge deaths.

This spy photo reveals the contents of the Growing Your SELF! Home Study Course.

“I can’t believe it! Who would do such a thing?”

That was my response when I saw the picture.

This spy photo of the soon-to-be-released Growing Your SELF! Home Study Course is one of several that mysteriously surfaced in multiple places on the web early this morning.

The picture, showing the previously unrevealed core contents of the much-anticipated manifesting program, must have been taken sometime during the last week.

I’m not sure how it happened. I believe that the spy, or spies, took the photo using a high-tech telephoto lens from a vantage point across the pond. The pictures appear to have been taken through a window of the self-development lab, which it was discovered, was left open for ventilation during a warm day last week.

Yes, the self-development lab here at Peaceful Spirit has been under extremely tight security while I worked feverishly to put the final pieces of Growing Your SELF! together in time for Friday’s release date, but the open window somehow escaped our hourly security sweeps.

My chief security officer, a cocker spaniel named Princess, was not on duty at the time of the incident due to her recent surgery, but when I told her about the photos she assured me she would get to the bottom of this as soon as she gets her neon pink cast removed!

My investigators are pursuing all available leads, but preliminary evidence found at the scene suggests two theories:

1. That the perpetrators were simply over-anxious fans eager to start implementing the powerful self growth process contained within the Growing Your SELF! Home Study Course.
2. Or it could be a case of industrial espionage. There are several well-known self improvement gurus who are nervous about the release of this product because it will effectively put many of them out of a job.

In the end it doesn’t matter much!

Lawsuits begin, James Arthur Ray troubles continue.

There have been several new developments in the James Arthur Ray sweat lodge death investigation since my last update. Here is a quick look at what’s happening:

Survivor Stories

First, several attendees have come forward and publicly shared their version of what transpired inside the sweat lodge on that fateful day.  Beverly Bunn is one of those attendees. During the retreat Beverly was roommates with Kirby Brown, one of the three people who died from their injuries. Beverly appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to share her story. You can also read her account in an AP story here.

Beverly claims that James was unconcerned when people started getting sick. She also claims that when the crisis occurred her attempts to help were rebuffed by James Ray staff members.

“I told them about 10 times, ‘I know CPR, I know CPR,’” she said. “They kept pulling me away and pulling me away.”

Beverly also spoke about James Ray’s response to the tragedy, saying that James ‘abandoned’ the participants the night of the tragedy, and that they awoke the following morning to find a note from a James Ray staffer that James was in meditation. That, she says, was the last they heard from James Ray.

Second, as expected the lawsuits have begun. Two were filed this week, one by a victim’s family and one by a survivor. You can read about it on the channel 12 website here and also in an AP story about the lawsuits here.

I’m sure this is just the beginning, as other attorneys representing victims and survivors are said to be gathering evidence in preparation for similar suits.

It looks like a long road ahead for James Arthur Ray. I don’t know how deep his pockets are, but it appears he is going to be experiencing a cash flow problem very quickly.

Last week, Ray’s book publisher Hyperion Books announced that it was delaying the November release of two of James Ray’s books. Although the publisher wouldn’t comment on the reason for the delay, it is obvious that they want no part of this scandal, and will delay the release until they see how things turn out.

I also shared with you in an earlier post that James Arthur Ray canceled all his remaining events for 2009. That’s going to hurt!

The announcement that James was canceling his events came shortly after the Green Valley Hotel in Las Vegas canceled one of James’ upcoming ‘Quantum Leap’ events that was scheduled there. The hotel notified all attendees via email that their reservations and the event itself had been canceled.  You can read the Green Valley Hotel cancels James Arthur Ray event story here. Now, according to a Los Angeles Times report, James has put his Beverly Hills mansion up for sale.

The mansion, which he bought for $4 million in March is listed for sale at $5,495,000.

This saga will continue unfolding and I’ll keep posting news as I hear about it, but every story I read about this tragedy reminds me that I, and I alone, am responsible for my growth. As a teacher, it also reminds me that I am responsible for the influence that I exert on others.

You and I spend a lot of time talking about influence, both here on this blog and over on the Growing Your SELF! radio show, but usually we are talking about the amount of influence that we allow others to have on us. I always stress that it is your choice to allow someone else’s thoughts or opinions effect your decisions and actions.

But it is also important to be aware of the influence you are putting out towards others. Your intentions may be good, and you may have the other person’s best interests at heart, but that doesn’t mean that your version of reality is better for them than their own.

Just something for you to think about as you go through your day.

Suze Orman reveals secret to happiness on Oprah today.

Do you know the secret to finding happiness?

If you do… then you are probably a relatively happy person most of the time.

If you don’t… then you might still be struggling and complaining, and you might even feel miserable most of the time.

Would you believe me if I told you that the choice is always yours?

That you get to choose whether to be happy or not?

I was watching the Oprah show today with Donna and Princess when I heard one of the best formulas for happiness that I’ve heard in a long time.

It made me sit up and listen.

Suze Orman, bestselling author and financial guru,  was one of Oprah’s guests today and during her interview she said,

“When you can make the average GREAT, your dreams can become a reality.”

Wow!

That is powerful.

You might feel that your life is ‘average’ and that your dreams are so far away that you will never be able to reach them.

That’s a common feeling when you are first beginning to make changes in your life.

You might even think that your ‘happiness’ will only show up after you achieve your dreams.

But that’s not how it works.

In reality, your dreams show up after you choose to be happy right now.

You see, one of the reasons that you might be struggling to reach your dreams is because you are too negative about your life right now. You might not think you are being overly negative, but if you examine your thoughts and feelings you may discover otherwise.

Too much negativity prevents you from reaching your dreams because:

• You can’t focus on your dreams and take advantage of opportunities to move forward if you are too busy whining and complaining about how bad things are.
• You can’t maintain a sense of hope and optimism about your future if you are are too busy feeling sorry for yourself and putting yourself down all day long.
• You can’t make empowered decisions if you are hiding from the truth.

Take a hard look at your life right now. Look at your attitudes and mindset. Look at where you are placing your attention and focus.

If you are focused on all the things that are wrong with your life you really can’t be surprised that you are unhappy. Happiness is not about your circumstances or your problems. Happiness is about how you feel about those circumstances and problems.

Your life may seem ‘average’, but average compared to what?

Your dreams are anything but average, right?

Your dreams of a GREAT life for yourself and your loved ones are just waiting for you to take action and move towards them.

But that can seem hard to do that when you are frustrated and unhappy with your situation, I know… I’ve been there.

The key to making your dreams a reality, as Suze Orman said on Oprah today, is to make the average GREAT, in other words, you have to take what you have now and accept it and embrace it.

How do you do that?

• Where ever you are, what ever you are doing, you should do it the best that you can.
• Whatever situation you find yourself in make the most of it.
• Vow to succeed in spite of your past mistakes, in spite of your challenges, in spite of your fears.

It is important to remember that choosing to be happy right now does not mean that you have to be happy with the circumstances of your life or that you have to like the challenges or problems you have  in your life right now.

It does mean that you have to accept them.

That’s all.

Accept them.

Stop fighting and resisting and giving your energy to all those things that you don’t want anyway!

Choose instead to be the best YOU that you can be right now.

Think about it:

What will it take to bring your dreams into reality?

What will it take to make tomorrow GREAT?

Can you really expect to manifest your desires by being ‘average’ today?

Can you honestly expect to be happy tomorrow if you don’t change how you feel today?

Do you see how this works? Being happy is a choice. Reaching your dreams is a choice.

Choose well!

James Arthur Ray cancels remaining 2009 events.

James Arthur Ray announced today that he is canceling all of his remaining seminars and engagements for the rest of 2009. The announcement comes in the wake of the three tragic deaths that occurred during a sweat lodge ceremony that also left 19 people hospitalized. The sweat lodge ceremony was the culmination of a spiritual retreat led by James Ray in Sedona, Arizona.

The announcement, posted today, (October 29, 2009), on his website at www.jamesray.com, and in a duplicate message posted on the James Arthur Ray blog, states that:

“…I’m postponing all the events I had planned for the remainder of 2009. These events will be rescheduled as soon as possible in 2010—once the essential work that must be done on the Sedona tragedy has been completed.”

The work James Ray is referring to is getting to the bottom of the deaths and illnesses and discovering just what happened inside that sweat lodge.

“In the days following the terrible accident, I struggled to respond in the right way. This is the most emotionally wrenching situation I’ve ever faced, and it’s now clear I must dedicate all of my physical and emotional energies to helping bring some sort of closure to this matter. That means helping the authorities and the families get to the bottom of what happened.

I’m committed to devoting all of my time, for as long as it takes, to achieve this goal.

The lives of the families impacted by the Sedona tragedy have been changed forever. These families deserve to have the questions raised by the tragedy answered as quickly and authoritatively as possible. That is the goal I’m dedicated to achieving.”

This is a 180 degree turn around for the self help teacher who was running seminars and carrying on business as usual immediately following the sweat lodge deaths. In a blog post on October 20, 2009, James spoke about the ‘heat’ he was receiving for his decision to keep working, but that

“I have chosen to continue with my work. It’s too important not to. One of the lessons I teach is that you have to confront and embrace adversity and learn and grow from it. I promise you I am doing a lot of learning and growing. I have taken heat for that decision, but if I chose to lock myself in my home, I am sure I would be criticized for hiding and not practicing what I preach.”

I’ve spent some time reading various blogs and media reports about the incident and it was clear that some people seemed to support his decision to keep working and to keep running seminars and others seemed appalled that he could even think about running another seminar so soon after the tragic events in Sedona.

Evidently the pressure to stop became too great and resulted in today’s announcement that James will be canceling the remainder of his 2009 seminars.

In my opinion, this is the only right thing to do. There are so many unanswered questions about this tragedy and many of James Arthur Ray’s actions following the fiasco have appeared slightly less than honorable. Hopefully, he will cooperate with authorities and provide some of those answers that he claims to be looking for.

Yes, this might be a career ending event for James, only time will tell. I’m sure he is scared and I’m sure he has more than a few lawyers ‘advising’ him on what to do.

But come on!

If embracing adversity is what you preach, then stand up and take responsibility. Running seminars or not running seminars is not the issue… frankly, it doesn’t matter to me either way. The issue is communicating and cooperating with the authorities and families of the victims to get to the bottom of this.

More on the James Arthur Ray tragedy.

Here is the latest info on the James Arthur Ray sweat lodge death investigation. I know that this tragedy and its aftermath strike close to home for many readers, so I’ll keep you updated as new information comes out.

One of the survivors of the sweat lodge, who passed out and spent four days in the hospital, is speaking out about her ordeal. The story in the Arizona Sun relates Sidney Spencer’s experience at the sweat lodge and sheds a little light on what was actually going on inside the lodge. You can read the story here.

In another story on the Anderson Cooper 360 blog, a CNN video report reveals that there was similar trouble last year at the same James Arthur Ray event. Click here to watch the video.

It appears that an attendee of last year’s retreat was ready to come forward and report that about 20 people got sick at last year’s sweat lodge ceremony, but changed her mind about appearing on camera at the last minute, saying that she was being pressured by people still loyal to James Ray, and that she was confused and conflicted.

Who isn’t?

These tragic deaths and injuries are almost beyond comprehension.

But apparently this isn’t the first time that James Arthur Ray has had trouble related to his seminars. There have been several stories published recently detailing some other incidents, including a suicide, that happened at events James was running. Here is one of the stories about those incidents from the New York Post.

Will James Arthur Ray survive the backlash of these deaths?

Hmmmm.

I find myself thinking about some other spiritual leaders and wondering what their reaction would be if these deaths had occurred during one of their events. Would they still be planning and accepting registrations for next years event?

Or would they stand up and do the right thing?

Or what if this happened at an event that I was leading? Would I continue on? Or would I shift gears and focus my energy on cooperating with authorities to try to discover what went wrong?

Would I stand up and do the right thing?
